Disabling Secure Password Authentication (SPA)

What is this?

A recent software update pushed out by Microsoft has caused Secure Password Authentication (SPA) to be enabled by default on many customers' email clients.

Unfortunately, being a corporate-specific feature, this has caused issues in certain installations of Microsoft Outlook — especially where licensing or feature compatibility issues may be present. To resolve email connectivity problems, SPA must be manually disabled.

 

Below is a brief guide to turning it off for different email clients affected by the update:

Outlook Express

1. Select the Tools menu at the top of the screen and click Accounts.
2. Choose your email account and click Properties.
3. Navigate to the Servers tab.
4. Uncheck Secure Password Authentication (SPA).

Outlook 2002

1. Open the Tools menu and choose Email Accounts.
2. Select View or change existing e-mail accounts.
3. Click your Indichosts.net POP3 email account.
4. Remove the checkmark next to Secure Password Authentication.

Outlook 2007

1. Go to Tools → Account Settings.
2. Select your email account and click Change.
3. Uncheck Require login using Secure Password Authentication (SPA).
4. Click More Settings, then go to the Advanced tab.
5. Set Incoming Mail Port to 110 and Outgoing Mail Port to 25.
6. Ensure that SSL and Encryption options are turned off.

Windows Live Mail

1. Select the Tools menu and click Accounts.
2. Choose your account and click Properties.
3. Go to the Servers tab.
4. Uncheck the option for Secure Password Authentication (SPA).
